booklet questions
Describe the structure of our skeletal system
The adult human skeleton is made up of 206 bones that are located internally within the body. These bones join with hinge, ball & socket, pivot and saddle joints.
What is our skeletal system made of?
bones
What is the role of our skeletal system?
The three main roles of our skeleton is to support, protect and allow movement in our bodies.
What is the bone marrow? Where is this found?
Bone marrow is a fatty jelly like fluid that fills the spaces in the spongy inner bone.
What materials are our bones made of?
collagen
Calcium phosphate
How does our skeletal system change as we develop (from baby to adult)?
The human skeletal system becomes larger from birth usually until the end of puberty (growth). As a baby some of our bones are not fully developed and are instead still a cartilage, these soon harden and become normal bones. Later in life the bones can become worn, weaker and frailer due to old age or diseases.
What is this kind of skeletal system called?
The human skeleton is an endoskeleton which means it is internal.
What other kinds of animals have this kind of skeletal system?
Most mammals, reptiles and birds have endoskeletons.
